before eventually going to bed, a short summary on today.
i am fine, yasuko is fine, the student is better again (though probably not fine) and taken care of - she really panicked this morning, maybe traumatized and is in hospital now. furthermore, basically all people i know more closely here are well, even the ones from sendai. interestingly, the internet seems to work in most regions of the country. it's currently the best way to contact people.
in kyoto is basically business as usual. if you don't watch news, you wouldn't recognize here a catastrophy happened (and maybe still under way) in another part of the country.
several foreign attenders of the workshops arrived (mostly those from sweden. remarkable.), though another colleague was said to immediately have turned around taking next the flight back right after arriving to kansai (osaka) airport. information on the nuke plants is still contradictory - i have the feeling western media and governments are somewhat overexaggerating, while japanese authorities probably play the issues down. i have to admit, i currently like the latter best - doesn't help anybody when people start to panic. and it's anyway difficult, i believe, to get the people out of the areas around the nuke plants - they belong to the most devastated with roads and train tracks blocked or destroyed.
i will stay here for the moment. doesn't make sense to stress others for getting a flight out of here, i think. i will not die or get seriously injured here - even if nuke plant situation escalates. also, people living here can not just escape, so leaving would feel like betrayal to my friends, acquaintances, and colleagues here. as long as they recommend i stay, i will (i think. though subject to reconsideration when situation worsens).

as explained, before we decided to move to kyoto this afternoon/evening. by now, we arrived. shinkansen worked well. the areas of tokyo, i've seen looked pretty normal - if you had missed the quake and didn't listen to news, you wouldn't necessarily recognize. except for fairly empty bento-box and bottled water and green tea shelves. and, for my feeling comparably few people at all of the stations. people are extremely disciplined.
news about power plant are very ambiguous. japanese government at least claims that the explosion wasn't the reactor core and that now they pump seawater to the reactor to coll it down, i.e., maybe less horrible than sounds/sounded from several news channels. and, trying to think rationally - even at chernobyl the immediate effect didn't reach more then a couple of ten kilometers. mid- and longterm radiation is a different question, which is definitely a serious issue for people living here. but i will make it sooner or later out of here again alive and with, i am fairly confident, minor health damage.
apart from the power plant, one is trying to restart the "normal" life again - more and more trains are going again, most airports are said to be open again (though it seems most inbound flights from europe and the us have been cancelled), shops are open, ... at the institute in tokyo employees even came in today for their planned football match (even though for example one of them had walked home the night before from tokyo station in the east to one of the outskirts in the west, about 20-30km)!
what seems strange and over the top to me, however, is that the workshop i was supposed to go shall still be held. though basically no foreigners will make it to here. and though the offices and labs of jaxa in tsukuba (north of tokyo), one of the main organizers of the workshop, are strongly damaged (so i wonder, what sense does it make to order those people to kyoto in the west. they might have better things to care for now...).

ok, summary: i am in kyoto now and will likely be until wednesday. until then i hopefully see clearer, what to do then - whether to go back to tokyo and stay as planned, or try to get a flight out of here (at least i took all my stuff with me from tokyo. so i am prepared. but asked for advice, both my ex-boss and german embassy didn't suggest to immediately try to leave, but to stay calm and wait for further information), or stay in kyoto longer. for the moment things are ok here - i have a warm room, food seems to be available, water is running, i have internet and can work. also, most of the people i know here are alive and well taken the circumstances.

no, idea, whether anybody still reading this blog. since i moved from japan back to europe (exactly: sweden) more than a year ago. however, at the moment i'm back in japan for a business trip. right into the huge earthquake. because it's difficult and quite some effort to keep in touch with everybody (personally) by email, and i also don't like to spam everybodies mailbox, i will revive this blog and use it as a way to keep people informed, where and how i am.

so, currently i am fine. i stayed at the institute over night. there no serious damages occured and everything was working fine. i was supposed to go to a workshop to kyoto sunday to wednesday. now it looks like we will leave now and try to get to kyoto today. reason1: there are power outages announces for tokyo tonight. reason2: with the collapsing nuclear power plant in fukushima (around 300km north of here), it's probably better to get some more kilometers between us the power plant. also, kyoto seems to not have been affected by the earthquake, i.e. seems to be a safer and more convenient place for the moment. though nobody knows at the moment, whether the wrokshop will really take place under the current circumstances...

so far for now. i try to keep that updated here whenever things change and i have access to internet...

nu schlaegt's aber dreizehn. also, genaugenommen schuettelte es. mit magnitude 6.4 (USGS) bzw. 6.6 (JMA) und seismischer intensitaet hier vor ort 3 bis 4. letztere sind hier erklaert. war bisher mit abstand das staerkste beben, was ich erleben konnte/durfte/musste. in shizuoka und auf izu (hallo, olle! ja, dort! aber besser jetzt, als wie wo wir da waren, ne?) gings bis 6- rauf. und JMA - das ist im uebrigen der japanische wetterdienst; neben erbeben, vulkanen und taifunen auch fuer die kirschblueten- und laubfaerbungsvorhersage zustaendig - hat ne tsunami-warnung rausgegeben:
mit geschaetzter hoehe 0.5m, eher niedlich also. fuer gefaehrliche werte dabei war's dann zu nah an der kueste. hat alles seine vor- und nachteile.

netterweise war ich noch im buero. da fuehl ich mich a bissel sicherer als in meinem 70er-jahre holzhaeuschen im 3.stock unterm dach. wobei ja holz besser sein soll - schwingfaehiger - als beton. aber so wirklich traue ich da wartung/unterhalt/pflege nicht. ausserdem kann ich mich im buero untern schreibtisch verkriechen, so wie mir das in der katastrophenuebung beigebracht wurde. nunja, werden sollte. als es uebungsmaessig ernst wurde damals hat uns sprachunmaechtigen auslaendern freilich keineR darauf hingewiesen. ich spruehr die glassplitter noch deutlich im ruecken ;-) jedenfalls heute: yanosh unterm tisch. was daheim ja ausgefallen waer. in ermangelung eines ausreichend hohen tisches. jaja, is schon besser, wenn mensch quasi im buero wohnt.

nu is das aber nur die halbe story. oder die drittel oder viertel story. jestern (also eigentlich vorgestern. weil jetzt ist ja schon frueh) och schon. quasi dasselbe spielchen. ausser, ich war nicht im buero. sondern woanders. 8.stock apartmenthochhaus. schwingt geil auch schon bei kleineren beben *schluck* (dafuer wurde ich aber mit vollem koerpereinsatz schutzbetreut) und gestern war's mit magnitude 7.1, sagt USGS. JMA hat diesmal nur 6.9 gemessen. naja, im mittel mit heut stimmt's ja wieder. aber doppelt so weit weg. lokal-seismisch wie eben - 3 bis 4.

im ueberblick schaut das dann bei USGS in Asien grad so aus (fuer wen's interessiert, hier auch der link zum jeweils aktuellen stand in der region):

je dicker die kaestchen, desto dicker das beben (da faellt mir gleich noch auf, dass es zeitgleich in indien/myanmar/thailand auch gewaltig rumste. mit entsprechender, ernsthafter tsunamigefahr. hoffe, dass ging glimpflich ab dort.)

da hab ich drei jahre japan relativ unbeschadet ueberlebt, und dann sowas. ich hoff, dass geht nicht so weiter jetzt. will japan nochmal ordentlich "Auf (Nimmer?)Wiedersehn" sagen, bevor ich mich aus'm staub mach? haeh?

und weil das noch nicht reicht, gab's gestern - also jetzt wirklich gestern. von heut morgen aus gesehen, nicht von heut-nacht-durcharbeitend-daher-verpasster-tageswechsel aus - tja, vortaifun? krass fetter regenguss. war so laut, dass ich 6uhr morgens nicht mehr pennen konnte. hab ja hier schon einiges vom himmel runterkommend erlebt. aber das war nochmal extraklasse. JMA sagt, stellen-&zeitweise mehr als 50mm/h. fing schon am abend an, das waren aber eher schauer - heftig, aber in 5 minuten vorbei. und zog sich bis in den vormittag rein - wo yanosh uff arbeit musste. und die regenkleidung freilich nicht mithatte. und regenschirme nicht mag und auch sowieso stur-vergnazt war und keinen wollte. naja, entsprechend gut durchgespuehlt war ich dann (als ich endlich am bahnhof ankam, hoerte es erstmal wieder auf. timing!). immerhin hatte ich noch'n trockenes t-shirt im regenbeanzugten rucksack (ja, der ist vorbildlich, der rucksack. im gegensatz zu mir.). im bahnhofsklo angeschmissen, weil tiefkuehlschrank geklimaanlagte zuege ganzkoerpernass - nee, muss nicht sein. schliesslich will ich mir ja meine grippe vom schwein erst in D abholen (hier hoert mensch davon gar nix mehr seit mitte juni. die panik-mode war dann durch.).

aehm, ja, und der taifun kommt erst noch. aber scheint nicht so dolle zu werden. soll suedlich von tokyo vorbeiziehen. und ist auch nur blau bis gruen, also eher schwach (hab ma bissel am original rumgeschnippelt, damit's nicht so gross ist und ihr trotzdem was sehen koennt. original ist von dort):

fazit: allet im lot. muss ich aber nicht so haben. und schon gar nicht alles auf einen haufen. in meinem alter (ah, ja: danke fuer die glueckwuensche an alle glueckgewuenschthabenden).

auf umhaengtasche an einheimischem studenten. heut morgen auf dem weg zu meinem tagesanfangskaffeeprovider (ja, diesmal war's tatsaechlich noch recht morgens - allerdings nicht sooo morgens, dass die freundliche junge frau an der theke wieder bemerkt: "ist aber ganz schoen frueh heute" bzw. im o-ton "はやいですね。"). leider ohne foto.
